About the Corporate Secretary/ Chief Legal Officer

Abdulqawil is a legal practitioner with years of experience in public sector finance and compliance, corporate finance and compliance, credit review and management, banking, securitization, and corporate restructuring. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2009 after obtaining an LL.B. from the University of Abuja.

He started is career as a Senior Registrar at the Customary Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, before joining Enterprise Bank (now Heritage Bank) as Legal Officer. He later became the Regional Legal Coordinator (North) of the bank before joining the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as a Legal Officer.

At the CBN, Abdulqawil served on several committees, including the Committee on Improvement of Lending Environment, Committee on Reputational Risk Forum of the Bank, Committee on the review of the Bank’s Pension Agreements, Committee on the review of the Prudential Guidelines for Banks and other Financial Institutions, and Committee on Cost Saving within Legal Services Department.

Prior to his current role, Abdulqawil was the Special Adviser on Legal Matters to the Honourable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning. He was a member of the Finance Act Review Committee set up by the Minister of Finance between 2021 and 2023.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Debt Recovery Practitioners of Nigeria; a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK; a life member (Associate category) of the Institute of Directors; a member of the Section on Business Law of the Nigerian Bar Association; and member, Society for Corporate Governance, Nigeria. He holds a number of governance, risk, anti-corruption and compliance-related certifications.
